This is Virna Borgogno, First woman in Italy whit a degree in enology
and I introduce our family owned winery over a century, situated in Barolo at the center of the Langhe.
Our estate today extends over 12 hectares of some of the most important crus in Barolo:
Cannubi , Preda, Sarmassa, I Merli, San Giovanni, and Costa delle Rose.
Together with my sister Ivanaand having a rich family history with wine, and some of the finest vineyards in Barolo, I began bottling under my own name, Virna Borgogno, decades ago, since I became winemaker in the family.
Our winery sits at the foot of the Cannubi hill, which marks the dividing line between two different types of soil.
The wines offer a glimpse into the memories of my family. They tell a story, one of vigor and accomplishment, and of a long family history in a land perfectly tailored to create Nebbiolo wines.
Our crus have been awarded with the most important scores and awards from WineSpectator, Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Gambero Rosso Slow Food and all the major Italian guides, decanter.
I’d pleased to go deeper with the conversation and I’d be delighted to show you my wines.
We have a great chance attending

An estate is initially a project. And a project is a dream which gradually takes shape, first of all on paper, then on the land and finally, for us, in our wine. Our project starts from two simple ideas: respect for nature and alignment with technological progress. Simple does not, however, mean easy. There have been times when we’ve really had to push forward and others in which we’ve had to stand with our feet planted firmly on the ground; we’ve had to invest in land, technology and, above all, research. This is how we’ve created Cascina Castlèt. The grapes are grown in 31 hectares of vineyards in Costigliole d’Asti.
We have concentrated on the land, our land, and on the local grape varieties: Barbera, Moscato, Uvalino and Nebbiolo, but also on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, this last variety having been grown in Costigliole since the late 18th century, when Marquis Filippo Asinari of San Marzano planted it for the first time.
Cascina Castlèt has belonged to the Borio family for generations. I, Mariuccia, inherited it from my father in 1970. Over the years I’ve had to make brave decisions, also with regard to marketing, with bottles and labels that have been seductive, sometime provocative and very individual. A touch of creativity has always gone into the names of our wines: Passum, Policalpo, Avié, Litina, Goj, Ataj and Uceline. They all have a little secret, a story, which we invite you to try and discover.
“Those who choose a bottle of Cascina Castlèt love beautiful things, good things, things that make them dream”. It’s a matter of ethics and culture. For us, ethics and culture mean respect for the environment and for those who work with it.

The Montalbera Winery was founded at the beginning of the twentieth century in an area between the municipalities of Grana, Castagnole Monferrato and Montemagno. Towards the mid-eighties, the Morando family adopted a policy of expansion that was not yet completed, with the acquisition of neighboring land and the direct planting of new vineyards, mainly in Ruchè. Today the company is surrounded by its 115 hectares vineyards arranged in a circular shape in a single body in an entirely hilly position, with different exposures and soils ranging from clayey to limestone. The Morando family has its roots in the Langhe and this bond could not fail to be expressed in the vineyard and in the cellar. Castiglione Tinella, the place of origin of the founder Enrico Riccardo Morando, is home to about 10 hectares of vineyards planted with Moscato d'Asti. And it is from these vineyards that Montalbera produces Moscato d'Asti DOCG San Carlo, which takes its name from the ancient church of San Carlo, which is located a few meters from the birthplace of the family founder.
Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG is a wine with an unmistakable character; The pleasant floral hints of rose and violet, the fruity notes of apricot and the spiciness that emerges with evolution make it immediately recognizable in the glass. Montalbera has always believed in Ruchè and its uniqueness. For this reason, the company has chosen to invest in research capable of tracing the genetic license of a grape variety with uncertain origins and often placed next to other varieties that are actually very distant in terroir and expression. The aim of the work (carried out by the Bioaesis laboratory in Ancona) was to use DNA as an invisible barcode to determine the genetic traceability of the grape variety.
All the analyses carried out confirmed that Ruchè has its own characteristic genetic structure and different from the other varieties of vines in the databases.
Nowadays the winery is run by the third generation Franco Morando and the total production counts around 500 000 bottles of the highest quality wines. The wine portfolio comprises the Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG as the 60% of its wine range, the Nizza DOCG, the Barbera d’Asti superiore DOCG, the Grignolino d’Asti DOC, the Barolo DOCG, the Barbaresco DOCG, the Piemonte DOC Viognier, Timorasso DOC Derthona, as well as the sparkling wines both in Charmat and classical method wines, the sweet wines of Passito of Ruche and Moscato d’Asti DOCG.
The Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo is located in the heart of the well-known BaroloDistrict, inside the Langhe Region in the South of Piedmont hills. It's a family-run winery, now in the capable hands of Giorgio - Giovanni's son, the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Giuseppe but the real turn over came with his son Giovanni who, together with his wife Maria, the real witness of the family's story, bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo, the Sorì in Piedmontese language, among the best in the Barolo Wine District.
Today the Sordo Family owns 53 hectares, spreaded out in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d'Alba around Langhe and Roeroregion.
Sordo is unique. It's the only existing winery which can boast 8different kinds of Barolo CRU: "Monvigliero" in Verduno, "Ravera" in Novello, "Perno" in Monforte d'Alba, "Gabutti" in Serralunga d'Alba and the last four CRU in Castiglione Falletto "Parussi", "Rocche di Castiglione", "Villero" and "Monprivato".
The Sordo Family proposes a guided visit in the historical cellars founded in 1912. Through this tour you could discover the entire production cycle of the Sordo wines, from vinification to the salons with 135 big Slavonian oak barrels for aging the Barolo wines, where you could also visit the evocative "infernot", 12 meters underground. The tour continues through the tunnel for aging of the wines in large bottles (magnum & jèroboam format) that leads you to the new winery, built in 2014, the result of a modern architectural project - from outside seems like two big barrels cut in half - desired by Giorgio Sordo. Here you could explore the new bottling area and the storage of the bottles with the "Riserva" mention of Barolo that goes back to 1989. Opposite to the show-room, you have the panoramic salon where you could taste the Sordo labels with the different shades of our wine tasting suggestions.

Marchesi di Grésy has long been recognised as one of Piemonte's top producers, owning 45 hectares of vineyards across Langhe and Monferrato. In 1973 Alberto di Grésy began production of wines under the di Grésy name - vinifying their own estate grapes rather than selling to other local producers as in the past. His philosophy is simple but effective; to produce wines using the best available technology that respect tradition and promote the character and personality of the terrain and grape variety. In 2013, his children, Alessandro and Ludovica, joined him in the winemaking business.
