Canaan Winery is a premier Chinese wine producer situated in Huailai County, Hebei Province, approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Beijing. Established in 2006, the winery was founded with the vision of crafting world-class wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region .
Following an extensive two-year exploration covering over 17,000 kilometers across 11 provinces, Huailai was selected for its favorable conditions, including a monsoon continental climate, significant diurnal temperature variations, and the moderating influence of the nearby Guanting Reservoir . The first vines were planted in 2009, and by 2012, a state-of-the-art 15,000-square-meter winery was completed, boasting an annual production capacity of up to 1 million bottles .
Canaan Winery‘s flagship brand, “Chapter and Verse” (诗百篇), draws inspiration from classical Chinese poetry, symbolizing the artistry and depth of their winemaking philosophy . The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture practices, including the use of cover crops and natural fertilizers, and employs meticulous winemaking techniques such as separate fermentation tanks for each vineyard block and clone to preserve the distinct characteristics of each varietal .
Under the guidance of chief winemaker Zhao Desheng, who brings experience from Bordeaux, Canaan Winery has garnered international acclaim. Notably, the 2019 Chapter and Verse Syrah Huailai Reserve was named Chinese Wine of the Year in 2024 by wine critic James Suckling . The winery’s commitment to quality and innovation has positioned it as a leader in China’s burgeoning wine industry.
