The winery emphasizes sustainable viticulture practices, including the use of cover crops and natural fertilizers, and employs meticulous winemaking techniques such as separate fermentation tanks for each vineyard block and clone to preserve the distinct characteristics of each varietal .

Notably, the 2019 Chapter and Verse Syrah Huailai Reserve was named Chinese Wine of the Year in 2024 by wine critic James Suckling . The winery’s commitment to quality and innovation has positioned it as a leader in China’s burgeoning wine industry.

THE ORIGINS
Orpheus & The Raven is a celebration of creativity, unbound by tradition.
Born from a creative partnership and recognizing the fire in each other, the founders decided to channel their passion into developing a wine brand driven not by sales volumes, market share, or consumer insight, but by a pure expression of their love for fine wine and art.
With nothing in their arsenal except the freedom to express, passion, creativity, energy, and a single wine vat, the pair started Vinoneers, the umbrella company for the brand Orpheus & The Raven.
ABOUT US
Orpheus & The Raven was conceptualized in 2015 by winemaker Etienne Louw and graphic designer Brenden Schwartz. Their vision finds expression in wines and labels that introduce something refreshingly unique to the market. Each wine in the range embodies a sense of place and purpose, reflected in the stories behind their creation.
Rather than using the labels merely to convey information about the wine, Etienne and Brenden use them to tell the story of their personal journeys, inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus in the Underworld. This myth serves as the foundation for Orpheus & The Raven, with the brand developed as alter-egos for the Vinoneers.
Etienne, a classically trained musician, is represented by Orpheus with his lyre, while Brenden’s alter-ego derives from his family crest, depicting a raven. Ravens are known for their creativity, cunning, wisdom, and bravery—qualities that constantly encourage Orpheus to look ahead.
Through Orpheus & The Raven, we blend art and winemaking, creating wines that are as storied as they are delightful.
QUINTA DO VALE MEAO
Douro Valley, Portugal
In 1877, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, queen of the 19th century Douro Valley and owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing, using for this the vast experience she had acquired throughout a lifetime as a Douro landowner. This ambitious project took eight years to complete, from 1887 to 1895. Sadly, this grand lady’s pleasure in her last and most significant enterprise was of short duration as she died in 1896.
Since then, the estate always remained in the hands of her descendants. In the 1970s, her great-great-great-grandson, Francisco Javier de Olazabal became responsible for its management and he began the long and laborious process of acquiring the shares that belonged to his kin and to other co-owners of the property. In 1994, he and his children became the sole owners of the Quinta. Until then, the grapes from the estate were sold to A.A. Ferreira S.A., the company established by Dona Antónia’s descendants, where they formed the basis of some its finest wines. This connection continued until 1998 when Francisco Javier de Olazabal resigned as Managing Director of A.A. Ferreira S.A. to dedicate himself, together with his oenologist son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida, to producing, ageing and marketing the wines from the Quinta through a new company, F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda.
Since that day Quinta do Vale Meao has continued to build an impressive reputation and set high standards of excellence through out the Douro. Currently the estate is under 62 hectares of vines with plantings of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Amarela, and Tinta Barro dominating. Soil make-up varies through the vineyard but for the most part are made up of slate, granite and alluvial gravel.
