Francois van Niekerk – Winemaker | Cellar Master | Pinotage Specialist
Francois van Niekerk is an award-winning South African winemaker with over two decades of experience in the wine industry. Born and raised in the iconic surfing town of Jeffreys Bay, his deep-rooted passion for nature led him from a background in Forestry to a celebrated career in viticulture and winemaking.
His journey began with harvests at Slanghoek Cellar in Rawsonville and Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate in California, sparking a lifelong passion for winemaking. After formal studies at Elsenburg College, he was mentored by Beyers Truter—South Africa’s renowned “Pinotage King”—who inspired his profound love for the Pinotage varietal.
Francois held the position of head winemaker at Windmeul Cellar for a decade and broadened his international experience with a harvest at the prestigious Château Angélus in Bordeaux. In 2014, he became Cellar Master at Wellington Wines, where he continues to craft high-quality wines and lead innovation.
He holds an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch Business School, blending technical winemaking expertise with strategic business acumen. His accolades include 6 ABSA Top 10 Pinotage awards, multiple Double Golds at Veritas and Michelangelo Awards, and the prestigious General Smuts Trophy. In 2019, he launched his own signature label: Francois van Niekerk Pinotage.
Francois’s winemaking philosophy is grounded in his respect for nature, emphasizing the harmony between soil, climate, and vine—a legacy shaped by his forestry roots and refined through global experience.
